How Romanian Postal Codes Work

Last updated: 2026-10-21

Romania uses a six-digit postal code called cod poștal. It is not a ZIP code (that is the US system) and it does not contain letters. If you are shipping to Romania, programming a checkout, or filling in a form, the code is always six digits, for example 010011 or 400001.

The format

A Romanian postal code looks like this:

010011
  • Six digits, no spaces, no letters.
  • Sometimes written with a space for readability (010 011), but forms and couriers expect the plain six digits.
  • The code identifies a post office and a delivery area, not just a city.

The digits are not random. They encode a hierarchy:

  1. the postal region;
  2. the county (județ);
  3. the locality / post office;
  4. the street or street segment.

This is why two addresses in the same city can have different codes: the code is tied to a street, a number range, or a block, not only to the city.

Examples

City Postal code example
Bucharest (Sector 1) 010011
Cluj-Napoca 400001
Timișoara 300001
Iași 700001

Bucharest is a special case: it is divided into six sectors, and the postal code usually starts with 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 or 06 depending on the sector. You can read more in our Bucharest postal codes guide.

Why the exact code matters

A correct postal code helps couriers route a parcel to the right delivery office. In practice:

  • Online stores use it to validate the address at checkout and reduce failed deliveries.
  • Couriers use it to sort parcels before the last-mile delivery.
  • Forms often ask for it as a required field, and a wrong code can delay the shipment.

A city-level code is better than nothing, but a street-level code is what you want when it is available.

How to find a Romanian postal code

You can search by:

  • street and number (for example, Lalelelor 12);
  • city or sector (for example, Cluj-Napoca or Sector 2);
  • the postal code itself, to see which addresses it covers.

Use the search on our English homepage or browse the major cities guides. The database is built from the official Romanian postal code list and is updated regularly.

Common mistakes

  • Using a ZIP code from another country.
  • Writing five digits instead of six.
  • Using the city code when the street has its own code.
  • Omitting the sector in Bucharest.
  • Assuming the code is the same for the whole city — it usually is not.

If you are integrating an address form, validate the code with a postal code API so the user gets feedback before the order is placed. You can read more on our Romanian postal code API page.
